Image taken part way up Kilauea Volcano in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
All in front of you is Lava as far as the eye can see until it reaches the Pacific Ocean at the top of the image. Because Mauna Loa and Kīlauea are active volcanoes, the island of Hawaii is still growing. Between January 1983 and September 2002, lava flows added 543 acres (220 ha) to the island.
The road you can see with the yellow lines ‘Chain of Craters Road’ has been re-built on top of old lava flows but stops abruptly near the coastline blocked off again by the latest flows of lava.
